From the manufacturer

About Us

Tamron USA, was established in 1979 as the US sales and marketing subsidiary of the Japanese optics manufacturer Tamron Co., Ltd. located in Omiya, Japan.

Tamron USA is comprised of two major divisions: Tamron Photographic Lenses and Tamron Industrial Optics Lenses. It is headquartered in Commack, NY, about 1 hour from New York City. Tamron USA distributes Tamron photographic lenses through its network of photo specialty retailers, online retails and mass retailers, and all photo products distributed by the US headquarters.

Description

From the Manufacturer

This exciting new high-speed, high-performance F/2.8 telephoto zoom for full-frame and APS-C format SLRs delivers outstanding imaging performance in a remarkably convenient package plus best close-focusing ability in its class down to 0.95m (37.4") (1:3.1 at 200mm) throughout the range. Its wide aperture permits the use of faster shutter speeds in any light, and the effective use of shallow depth-of-field to achieve dramatic pictorial effects. The ultimate in reach, speed, and performance for dual SLR formats.

SP AF 70-200mm F/2.8 Di Features
While overall dimensions are confined to the absolute minimum, the new SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 zoom lens is packed with features that allow stress-free photography: a versatile MFD of just 37.4" over the entire zoom range; best-in-class maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at f=200mm; and an advantageous internal focusing (IF) system. The new tele-zoom lens covers a desirable focal length range of 70mm medium telephoto to 200mm telephoto when mounted on full-size format SLR cameras and a focal length range from 109mm to 310mm* ultra telephoto when mounted on a DSLR camera with an APS-C sized imager.

Digitally Integrated (DI) Lenses for Top Imaging Performance
Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.

Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness
Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

Internal Focusing (IF) System
Internal focusing provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

I purchased this lens in February 2016. Recently, when I tried to take a photo I got an error message on my camera that said the lens wasn''t communicating with the camera and I should clean the contacts. The contacts looked clean, but I went over them with an eraser anyway. It didn''t help. To diagnose the problem I put the lens on a different body and a different lens on the original body. That confirmed the problem was with the lens. I took it to a shop and they diagnosed it as a broken electrical connector internally. They reported that Tamron won''t sell the required parts to independent repair shops and I must return the lens to Tamron. I haven''t yet done that. On the other hand, while it was working it was a great lens. I''m looking forward to getting it back.

This lens is a awesome for the Pentax K1. I used to be a Nikon shooter and had the Nikon 70-200VR2 on a D800e, this lens appears to be just a sharp visually (I am not a pixel peeper, so in technical terms, maybe not). It focuses fast enough for me, it is not as fast as the VR2, but we are talking in terms of less than a second still. The one downside to this lens, it is heavy...it is almost a pound heavier than the Nikon. This lens does not have vibration reduction (don''t need it on a K1 cuz the body has it).

If you are looking at the Sigma for the K1, beware, sigma may need to reprogram the lens to be compatible with the K1 (even if it works on a K3). Tamron does not...something about Tamron having a license agreement with Pentax and K1 does not. (I found out by buying a non-programmed Sigma).

I received the lens promptly as ordered. I have no complaints about the picture quality, it is a great improvement from most of my prior lenses. After receiving the lens I took some pictures and it work as advertised. It is 2 months after receiving the lens I started to get code 001 on my canon 5d2. This is the only lens that does it. I called Tamron and was told to send it in for service. I don''t like to send items that are new into service quite this fast. So beware this product. I think I will stick with Canon lenses from now on. Even with the lower picture quality lenses i have never had this problem.

Update 8/10/2013
I sent the lens into Tamron for service. Tamron fixed the lens and had it back to me within 7 days. The information stated it would take 3 days after receipt for the lens to be fixed.
I was pleasantly surprised when the lens was returned promptly. Most of the time was spent in shipping. So, I might have to evaluate my stand against Tamron products. Tamron customer service
was great, could not ask for a better experience.

The auto-focus problems reported by others is true. The only way I could get this lens to auto-focus every time was to manually move the focus to infinity first. Also it''s a stretch to call this a macro lens. Yes it focuses closer than any other 70-200mm lens, but not by a lot, and the maximum magnification ratio of 1:3 doesn''t qualify it as a true macro lens.

It''s a shame because the optics are very good, but if an AF lens doesn''t auto-focus consistently, it''s not really worth owning, is it? This lens has been discontinued and I can see why. The new one from Tamron that replaces this has added image stabilization, but they dropped the "macro" range, which is a disappointment and what set this lens apart from the others in the first place.
I sold it off, bit the bullet and got the Canon 70-200mm IS L II. It''s pricey, but it''s far and away the best 70-200mm zoom lens made, arguably the sharpest zoom lens of ANY focal length range by any manufacturer. And it has the shortest MFD of any of the currently made 70-200 lenses.

Here are the minimum focus distances on the 70-200mm lenses:

This lens, the Tamron 70-200 Macro: 37.4 inches
Its replacement, the Tamron 70-200 VC: 51.1 inches
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mark I: 51.6 inches
The Canon 70-200 IS Mark II: 47.3 inches
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L non-IS: 58.8 inches
Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS: 47.3 inches

I use it with canon 60D from the past few days. Here are my initial observations about the major questions I had about this lens before buying it.

1) Excellent picture quality. very sharp, especially at F4 and above. I did notice a slight lack of sharpness wide open(f2.8) in a low light scene. I am not a professional, so I maybe wrong too ! Portraits came out awesome !

2) Focusing speed is adequate although this is not a USM focus motor. I have found it good enough for most of my purposes. Kids, pets, moving vehicles etc, this is good enough. I HAVEN''T TRIED, but I am not sure if this will be fast enough for random fast moving subjects (football game etc). I guess it should do well in reasonable light.

3) Lowlight performance in focusing speed and picture sharpness is good, but wish it was a little better. Again it could be my ignorance and inexperience in photography.

4) Well built and Really heavy !

5) Has a bag and a hood that comes with it. Nice bonus and excellent quality too.

In short:
Only for the Image Stabilization and only for that reason. If I cold afford the IS version from Canon or Sigma, i would have done that. But ofcourse I knew that this one doesnt have a IS before I bought it. At this point, I Cant afford the IS variants from canon or Sigma.

For me, tripod helps a lot for image stabilization. But you know you cant have a tripod always. And this lens is really heavy. So holding it still for a good 30 seconds maybe a challenge :).

I will update my review as I make progress.

This is a really superb telephoto lens: The best one I''ve ever used. Bright, fast focus, crisp sharpness and contrast, beautifully balanced, small (overall size) in its class, breeze and a joy to use. Focuses down to about 30 inches which gets you about 3:1 and lovely sharp close-ups. Accurate focusing on stop-down (no discernable back/forward focus with changing f-stop). Beautiful, smooth bokeh. Very little chromatic aberration; and it''s never prominent or distracting. (I chose this lens over the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG HSM II Macro Zoom Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras due to the prominent bokeh CA in the SIGMA for close focus images, one of the main reasons I bought this lens. Refer to the dpreview reviews of these two lenses for a comparison.)

I''ve been shooting for over 30 years now, using primes (from 16mm to 400mm in 35mm film work) and zooms, APOs and EDs and ATXs, etc. I like this telephoto better than any other I''ve ever used. The sharpness corner to corner, no vignetting, beautiful contrast and bokeh, brilliant color, balanced handling, well-engineered package, lens hood, tripod ring, zoom and focus rings size, texture, location, and operation, the complete internal design (internal focus and zoom, no rotation of the front element) are all super. It comes with a nice draw-string padded case/sack that works efficiently in the camera bag. With the APS-C sensor in my camera (K-X, great camera) this lens is the 35mm equivalent of ~105-300mm f/2.8, a superbly useful range for a middle-range tele.

I would put this lens up against any telephoto zoom in this range. The only negatives I can mention are: Size (what do you expect at f/2.8, IF, IZ? but as noted, it is smaller than the others except SIGMA) and the fact that there are no (current, in-production, high quality) teleconverters that are compatible with it (for PENTAX). I have a PENTAX AF 1.7X converter that I bought on eBay: A very nice TC, but very expensive for what it is (the SIGMA APOs are much less).

[Update 22-Dec-2010: I still love this lens and have used it for thousands of shots. However, I recently purchased the PENTAX Da 300MM F4 Ed (if) Sdm Lens telephoto -- and I like that one even better, which is really saying something. I will continue to use this lens more than the 300 for reasons of versatility. They are about the same size and weight.]

UPDATE: this is a great lens. optically its better then the original canon L 70-200 2.8, and very much on par with the new V2, except its WAY cheaper. the only downside is I wish it had far longer rotation on focus for better control. I use it for video and when shooting 200 @ 2.8 at 100ft, DoF is next to nothing and the lens is twitchy to say the least. it takes real skill to follow focus some one.... then try super trucks racing at 90mph up close :)

No brainer for 1/3 the price of canon glass.

I''m using it primarily for video and the fact that it focuses in the same direction as canon glass does is very good.

do I care if its 10% less then canon''s glass ? no because that is just such a splitting hairs over nothing issue. this is a way better lens then you could of bought 10+ years ago. in fact if its slightly less that helps REDUCE moire problems. its still a nice contrasty lens. it has a nice look, focus speed is fine unless you shoot fast moving stuff. if I made my living shooting stills ( I used to actually ), maybe I might want the 100% best AKA canon 70-200 II 2.8 IS $2800 lens... but unless you are competing at the top of the game, I really doubt anyone will know the difference.... really. its an awesome piece of glass. I used to have a real FD 200 2.8 and this lens is better.

build quality is decent, its heavy but that should be expected for this sort of lens

the snap back for manual focus ring is very cool. wish all lenses did this. it makes a AF switch seem pretty dopey in comparison because you don''t have to move your hand anywhere to change modes. its seemless between manual and auto modes which is great when shooting fast moving subjects.

great lens, great price, no complaints !

I''m what you might call an eternal amateur photographer having been dabbling for about 30 years. I usually do macro work but wanted a medium range telephoto since I have the occassional need and my longest macro is only 150 mm.
I rarely believe that one manufacturer has the best option for everything and have been a long time fan of Tamron lenses from back in the adaptall-2 days.

I had the opportunity to evaluate this lens against the F4L IS, F2,8L and F2.8L IS and really found the differences for a user like me to be insignificant. What tipped me to the Tamron were.

1. Price. Come on lets face it with the Canon''s you''re paying a premium for that L series and the name. If you''re not planning to make a living off you''re photos then you don''t need an L lens (even then).
2. Macro focusing. This lens does a bang up job in the macro range. This is where I mostly shoot anyway and its a very handy capability if your out and about not to have to switch lenses for an opportunistic shot.
3. Weight, definitely a plus over the F2,8L IS because that thing is a brick. All lenses in this range benefit from a monopod or tripod and this one is no exception, but it is still light enough to tote around a while.
4. F2.8. Since I got my Canon 5d mkII I find the F2.8 and high ISO give me the ability to shoot under almost any conditions without worrying too much about shake. I can readily use this lens indoor under average lighting and not have to pull out a flash.

FYI. If weight is a serious issue then go for the Canon F4L IS. This is a fantastic lens, very light and for this range perhaps about the best if you don''t need the F2.8.

Overall the Tamron is a fantastic bargain at around $700, very solid and optically excellent performance.

I love taking photos and find this lens great product at a great price! Everyone seems to think you must get the most expensive of gear but I have achieved perfect, sharp photos in low light environments. Love it!
